Rest week:     2/VII    -    9/VII

29/VI

6 pm : Wild Card Match

Punishing Pandas - Barton United FC                                1 - 2

Barton United FC has earned the right to compete in the elite eight final confrontation to start next Tuesday, July 10. The game started smoothly for BU, but it's legendary inability to conclude was exploited by the Pandas to punish BU at the beginning of the second half. BU, however, promptly answered the provocation scoring with it's main striker Tim Alce. Alce gave an encore of his performance half way into the second half as he hung a shot-cross right at poles' intersection, behind an unblameable goalie. This sealed the result and granted access to Barton United to the playoffs. This week the gazzette will take a break, in accordance with the national holiday, and will be back for news on the playoffs.

28/VI

8 pm : Barton United FC - The SunBlades                           2    -    2

The highly anticipated game did not disappoint  the fans, the players or the game itself. It was termed, by those who saw it as "the best soccer match in this new millennium".  Both teams pulled out everything they had to show what the game is all about, and it ended with everyone going to dinner together after the fierce battle. The first tie game of the tournament was a slight disappointment to SunBlade defender Marco Sirianni who commented: "Very nice game, all the players did their best to win this important match and 2-2 is a fair result. However, too bad there was no winner... we could have played a return match and tease each other for another week.
I had a lot of fun, I wish all the games could be so intense and still so friendly. Thanks to the Barton United and the SunBlades." BU right defender Udayan Mallik also thought of it as a truly great game, but when asked for a comment fell short of words to describe such an awesome event.

BU Captain Francesco Tenore also had words of praise for the game: "I could not have imagined a better game against our brothers at space telescope, it was truly an awesome match and bound to be spoken about for months to come. And even if there was no winner this time, there will be a next time... It's true, we might not play in the playoffs, but this game was our season and we are happy about it's outcome."

Striker Marco Chiaberge, who scored all the goals for the SunBlade team told us today: "Finally, a great game! It was real fun. Even though it was a very tough match, it was an easy job for the referee, as "fair play" was the main theme of the game. However, my ankle is not feeling very well this morning (thanks to our friends Tim and Ralph!!!). But, as we say in Italy:"Ankles have been made to be beaten up!".

More later (team pictures will be posted during the weekend).

28/VI

8 pm : Barton United FC - The SunBlades                           2 - 2

(Note: Pre-game comments).

At the time when Apollo is about to leave his place to the beautiful Diana, the eternal rivals in who loves the game the most will be facing each other like in a Scipio versus Hannibal match to be played on the uneven battlefield of Garland. To understand the true meaning of this game, a little history is required. The dawn of these two teams starts up at the end of the XX century, when soccer was the planet's greatest game, yet it was starting to lose it's original charm: the game seemed to have contracted a kind of disease, as it was falling farther and farther away from what we intend a game to be and actually becoming a more macabre theatrical event, with frequent stadium displays of racism, hatred and many sentiments to which the game had never been linked in the past. These two teams from the troubled american city of Baltimore, have returned to what the way the game was meant to be played, with great displays of competitiveness, skill, tactics and finally a great friendship born through a common love of the game.

The winner of this game does not merely get automatic access to the playoffs (neither of which the two teams seem to be very interested in), but the right to prove on field with actions who the greater lover is, at least until the next tournament.

Good luck to both teams and may the best one win.

27/VI

6 pm : The SunBlades - Goodfellas                    4-0

The result of this game puts the SunBlades at a nearly unattackable 3rd place position in round A, due to the goal difference equal to +1, compared to the -13 of the last two teams of round A. Barton United FC would have to win with a difference of 7 goals on tomorrow's game, quite improbable, having seen the absence of a serious offensive game on the team.

26/VI

6 pm :  Mudd Wanderers - Team 1B

The victory for Team 1B confirms the team's first place position in round B and settling the Mudd Wanderers at 3rd place, to face the Red Devils of group A in the quarterfinal match to be played Wednesday, July 11. Turn to the brackets page for a global view of the playoff situation.

WILD CARD UPDATE.
Due to the forfeit of Team 5B, commissioner Schafer announced today (26/VI) that the quarter-final spot that belonged to the 4th team classified in round B will now be contended between the last (4th) team of group B and the last (5th) team of group A. The game should be played on Friday, June 29th at 6 pm. The winner of the game will enter the quarterfinals and face the winner of group A, in this case Team 1. For information, contact Mr. Schafer at jaschafe@jhmi.edu. Also see the brackets page for clarifications.

19/VI

6 pm :  The SunBlades - Team 1A                0 - 1

7 pm :  Goodfellas - Red Devils                     0 - 5

No journalist was present for the games but Sunblade midfielder Marco Chiaberge said on June 21, "We played a very good game with a strong team. We lost, but I am sure that next week, also thanks to the presence of Marco Sirianni, Barton Utd won't have any chance to win. I'm sorry, Francesco..."

Barton United captain Francesco Tenore decided not to answer the midfielder termed "a petty excuse for a soccer player. Actions will count on the field, not vain words."

The highly anticipated game will be played next Thursday at 6 pm. WBU-TV might be broadcasting the game through pictures on the web page in quasi-real time.

Comments and Interviews

The close, competitive match between the loquacious Wanderers and the Pandas ended in a victory by the away team, that nonetheless struggled throughout the game as the Panda defense and its goalie hindered the path to victory. Which came with 7 minutes gone by in the second half, through a goal of midfielder Shea Baggett, who made the last moment successful decision of shooting for the farther post, where the goalie couldn't reach. The Pandas had a few opportunities exploiting counteroffensives, but the Wanderer defense held its stance. The game was competitive and slightly edgy at times, but in the end the result prized the better team.

Nick Quintyne, captain of the Mudd Wanderers, commented yesterday's game saying: "It was good to win. We got the all-important goal in what I thought might have been heading for a draw. The whole team played really well tonight, great on defense, and had a much better time holding the ball up in midfield. This was a great performance by the team that I hope we can build on next time.

15/VI

Barton United FC - Goodfellas    0-1

In a game massively dominated by Barton United FC, the Goodfellas came out with a victory that has a heart. After having defended for essentially 45 consecutive minutes, the Goodfellas found out that all they needed was one goal to hush up the unconcluding BU team. That moment was found with about 6 minutes left in the second half when a Goodfellas defender sent the ball to a teammate at centerfield taking advantage of a lone man defense to shoot, successfully, in goal. The final 6 minutes were made up by the same offensive rampage by BU that had characterized the first half and part of the second. But, as happens in soccer, the team that wastes too much to the team with a heart, loses.

The SunBlades - Red Devils        0-2

This fiercely competitive match, defined as "one of the least fairly played games I've seen, definitely not played in the spirit of the tournament," commented referee Francesco Tenore, who replaced the no-show referee, captain of team 2B. Mr. Tenore continued saying: "I am the first to admit that I was not the man for the job. The game got quickly out of hand for me. To my defense, I can only say that this was the first game I've refereed in my life, and I did wish I had gotten a friendlier match to deal with."   The first big issue came with the first goal when a corner kick was taken a couple of meters inside the field, and the ref did not see it. Several Red Devils fouls for which the SunBlades protested were also not called. Mr. Tenore finally protested against the organizers: "People are not coming to ref for the games nor are they warning to say they can't. To enforce this, I believe the organizers should penalize by one point the team responsible for not showing anyone to ref. It's something I hate to say, but it's probably the only way to teach irresponsible people how to behave: it doesn't cost more than two minutes to write an e-mail saying that he/she cannot be present for any reason".  After having been reminded that team 2B is actually the other half of team 3A against which he played yesterday, he promptly added: "I didn't mean [for my last phrase] to sound that harsh, but this is the second time that it has happened, and that's why it's starting to become annoying."

Games Today:

Barton United FC - Team 3A

First official appearance of team 3A after yesterday's ruling by Commissioner Schafer. Barton United will have to give 110% today, since two consecutive successes will make the playoffs a true long shot for the home team.

The SunBlades - Red Devils

Both teams have disputed no matches since the beginning of the tournament. The Red devils due to the first round bye in week 1, the SunBlades have officially no games after yesterday's ruling.

Commissioner Schafer also confirmed that: "... any team that cannot field at least one male and one female player at all times during the game will forfeit."

GRO Commissioner appoints new team, schedules changes

On Wednesday, Commissioner James Schaefer announced the news regarding the tournament:

"As you may know, the original team 3A has folded. However, there is a solution - team 2B has 20 people on their roster, so they have offered to split into two teams. THus, we will have a new team 3A, one that will play all of the regularly scheduled games (including the one this Thursday against Barton United FC). As you may also know, the old team 3A forfeited against the Sun Blades last Thursday. Unfortunately for the SunBlades, this forfeit will not stand, and that game will be rescheduled with the "new" 3A team. If you have any questions, please let me know. I think that this will work out for the best, and group A will now return to having a full bracket of 5 teams."..." the "new" team 3A also has to make up their first game against the Sunblades. In addition, some other games need to be moved around, such as the ones originally scheduled for July 4th."

The updated schedule can be found on the calendar page

11/VI

On Friday's game between the Mudd Wanderers and Team 4B, Captain Nicholas Quintyne commented: "It was disappointing to lose the game, especially since I thought the team played well overall. I think our lack of bite in front of the net cost us, as well as getting a bit tired and sloppy towards the end of the game. Credit to Team 4B for winning, but I don't think there was much separating the two teams. Hopefully, with a bit of practice we'll be able to score a few more in our next game and come away with a win."

Comments from team captains of game 1 and Team 4B...

8-VI

Games played:

Team 1B - Punishing Pandas:         8-0

Mudd Wanderers - Team 4B:          1-3

Game 2

Team 3A - SunBlades

Team 3A no-show, no comments available at this time.

SunBlade defender Marco Sirianni expresses his disappointment stating that since he will be leaving, he wants the 21 June game versus Barton United FC to be postponed, as otherwise he will only be playing next week's game against the Red Devils. He adds: "It would be nice to play (and possible win) against Barton United since we used to play together every week in non-competitive games and a "serious" match would give us the opportunity to have something to discuss for the next 6 months!"

SunBlade mid-fielder Marco Chiaberge jokes: "We were prepared for a very tough game and were surprised how much of a walk in the park it actually was..." He then added about the training game they undertook in the official game's stance: "Yesterday? Normal. We played, without infamy nor praise."

SunBlade captain, Alex Framarini backed up his defender Friday night: "I agree with Marco Sirianni's comments and I wish to play Barton United FC with team at full strength, just in case Barton United FC is quickly knocked out the playoff. :-) This is only possible if we can get our schedule changed. Maybe if Francesco would email the league commissioner, this could be possible."

Barton United Captain Francesco Tenore answered the SunBlade captain saying: "If the decision is mine, there is no problem. Unfortunately, I think that to move a game to a different date, SunBlade officials should also give a thought to the logisticis, namely the ref, and whether the different bye date forced on another team is ok with the other team."

Apparently, Mr. Framarini has brought this problem forward to the league commissioner,  who is currently evaluating the problem.

As for the game, Alex Framarini commented: "I was disappointed with the "no show", but it gave us a good opportunity for us to practice under game conditions and to see how we play together. I'm proud of my team."

Game 1

Team 1 - Barton United FC:     10-1.

The inaugural game of the tournament ended up with a stunning victory by Team 1. The game started out with the no-show of the referee captain of team 1B. The problem was solved as the Red Devils' striker, the man known as Noshir, offered his time. Team 1's halftime lead of 3-0 still gave reason for hope to BU, but it faded quickly at the beginning of  the second half when Team 1 displayed all of it's strength scoring 6 goals in 20 minutes. BU's lone goal was the only testimony that the team was there, however inferior they might have been.

Barton-United is in print silence so no comments are available at this time.
